#Beyond Expectations: Where young people discover more than they expected

Four young people from Bulgaria and their youth leader represented the Institute for Youth Initiatives and Innovations (IYII) at the international youth exchange “Beyond Expectations”, bringing together young participants from six European countries in Venus–Mangalia, Romania.

From 1–9 September 2026, young people from Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Türkiye had the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and experiences, and explore together topics related to identity, personal choices, emotions, self-confidence and the courage to shape their own path. IYII participated in the initiative with four young people aged 16–18, accompanied by a youth leader. For the Bulgarian participants, the exchange was not only an opportunity to represent their country and culture, but also a chance to discover different perspectives, traditions and personal stories.

Looking Beyond Expectations

“Beyond Expectations” was much more than an international trip. The main aim of the exchange was to encourage young people to look beyond first impressions, stereotypes and the limitations we often place on ourselves.

Throughout the programme, participants took part in a variety of interactive activities, workshops, games, creative sessions and team challenges designed to encourage communication, self-reflection and collaboration in an international environment. Through non-formal learning methods, young people had the opportunity to reflect on who they are, how they make decisions, what motivates them and what holds them back, while discovering new ways of expressing themselves and connecting with others. The international dimension of the exchange was particularly valuable. Bringing together participants from different countries demonstrated that behind cultural and language differences lie many shared dreams, challenges and aspirations.

Europe Through Young Eyes

One of the highlights of the programme was the Intercultural Night – a special evening celebrating cultural diversity. Participants from each country shared their traditions, favourite foods, music, stories and interesting facts about their cultures. For the Bulgarian group, it was a wonderful opportunity to introduce Bulgaria to the other participants and showcase some of the richness and diversity of Bulgarian culture. These moments transformed the exchange into a genuine space for intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and connection.

New Friendships, New Skills, New Horizons

Taking part in “Beyond Expectations” gave young people the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, including communication, teamwork, self-confidence, initiative and the ability to adapt to an international environment. But perhaps the most valuable outcome of experiences like this is the change that takes place within the person.

1. Having the courage to speak in front of people you have just met.
2. Working as part of a team with people who do not speak your language.
3. Listening to a different opinion and learning to accept it.
4. Presenting your culture to others.
5. Stepping outside your comfort zone.

These may seem like small steps, but together they help build more confident, active and open-minded young people, ready to engage with the world around them.

An Experience That Stays With You

As the exchange comes to an end, participants do not leave with just photographs and certificates. They take home new friendships, memories, knowledge, inspiration and the feeling that they are capable of more than they once believed. For IYII, participation in “Beyond Expectations” was yet another opportunity to support young people in their personal development and encourage their active participation, self-confidence and sense of European belonging. Because a journey does not always change the world.
